Botox / Juvederm Fillers PDF Print E-mail

Many lives have been changed by cosmetic dentist Dr. Marc Salah.

Cosmetic Dental procedures in our Canton dental office not only involve the teeth, but the entire face. The problem is that a youthful smile with old skin doesn’t make for a natural looking match. It is now possible to take years off of both your smile and face by the use of muscle relaxants and dermal fillers.

You may be asking why a dentist would be using Botox and dermal fillers? We in the dental profession inject more and have a more extensive background than most health care professionals. Dermal fillers require numbing in the mouth to eliminate pain while injecting to plump out the depressed areas of the face. As cosmetic dentists we are also very esthetically minded so we naturally look at the entire face to obtain the most pleasing result.

Listed are Q and A’s in regard to Botox and dermal fillers (Juvederm).

Botox

What is Botox and how does it work?

Botox is a drug made out of a purified protein that inhibits the nerve transmission in facial muscles. This reduced muscle activity prevents complete contraction and therefore the skin doesn’t bunch so much, thereby eliminating wrinkles. Over time as we age, and as we subject our skin to the sun and pollution and smoke the skin looses its elasticity. When muscles contract the skin droops with the underlying muscle and wrinkles develop. Botox is used for the upper part of the face and dermal fillers are used to fill in the depressions on the lower part of the face. Therefore frown lines, forehead furrows, eye lines (crow’s feet), lip (smoker) lines, down-turned mouths and dimple chins can be treated by botox since these lines develop under active muscle contraction.

Is Botox safe?
Yes, it has been approved by the FDA for cosmetic use and has been used for over 30 years without any known long-term problems. Since Botox last between 3-6 months it is reversible and there are no long term problems associated with this treatment.

Can anyone have Botox?
It is suitable for everyone apart from those who are pregnant or breast feeding and certain medications. Certain

Do Botox injections hurt?
Not at all, Dr. Salam, The Gentle Dentist has deep concern that he can perform this painlessly. People may experience a mild temporary discomfort.

How will I look after Botox treatment?
There may be slight redness immediately after, which settles within a few hours. Application of ice helps and it is easily covered with makeup.

Is there anything I should avoid after Botox treatment?
For the 1st 4 hours we advise not to do vigorous exercise, drink alcohol or lie down flat. Otherwise life can carry on as normal.

How long does Botox last?
It usually takes around 2-14 days to see the total affect. Our recommendation is to not love it or hate it for 2 weeks. Repeat treatments have been shown to last 1- 2 years.

Does Botox leave my face numb?
No. There is no sensation change to your skin.

What are the side-effects of Botox?
It is a very safe treatment. However, side-effects can occur but are rare. They can include slight bruising at the injection site, temporary headache and slight nausea. Visit www.Botoxcosmetic.com for more information.

Will Botox leave me expressionless?
No, definitely not. Our training enables us to minimize any possible loss of facial expression by injecting specific muscles responsible for the wrinkles. The “Botox” look and a plastic face is totally out and our desire is to make you look younger, not fake.

Juvederm

What is Juvederm?
Juvederm is an injectable gel implant made out of hyaluronic acid, a natural complex sugar that bolsters skin elasticity, providing a smooth and supple appearance. Over time the body's natural hyaluronic acid becomes depleted and this supplements it.

How Does Juvederm Work?
Transparent Juvederm gel is injected with a syringe under the skin of the face to fill out deep wrinkles and folds. The most common areas treated are the nasio-labial fold (between the nose and the lip) and the “Marionette” lines at the corners of the mouth.
Juvederm improves your appearance by lifting and adding volume to the wrinkles and folds in the treatment area. After six to nine months, the compound is absorbed into the body.

Juvederm Side Effects
Side effects with Juvederm are rare, but may include redness, bruising, tenderness, or pain at the injection site. If these occur, they usually subside within three days. Rarely, discoloration may occur, but this is reversible. Any symptoms should subside within seven days.

Cost of Juvederm?

Juvederm cost typically ranges between $300-$400 per syringe, depending on the formula used and other factors. In some cases a second syringe may be needed for a fully satisfactory outcome.
