Kiss Bad Breath Good-bye!

There are an estimated 20 million people who suffer from Chronic bad breath. It is an embarrassing problem that can be psychologically damaging, resulting in the loss of jobs and personal relationships. Most people feel self-conscious about bad breath. At our office we treat bad breath as a medical condition.

Halitosis Can be More Than a Social Problem. While bad breath originates in the mouth 90% of the time, oftentimes it is a symptom of underlying disease, which needs the earliest possible treatment. Bad breath may be the first sign of diabetes, sinus infections, tumors of the nose and throat, lung disease and liver or kidney failure

VSC's are Usually the Cause: The actual cause for chronic halitosis are the levels of Volatile Sulfur Compounds that are present in the mouth.Volatile Sulfur Compounds or VSC’s are produced in the body as a result of the decay process. These compounds are produced continually as part of the normal life cycle of oral bacteria. The food debris trapped in broken teeth or left behind from improper cleaning also contributes to the VSC levels in the mouth. Not only are they the source of odor but they are also believed to be a major first step in the development of gum disease or gingivitis.

Diagnosis: We will analyze the source and severity of your bad breath and try to evaluate your problem in as little as three appointments. Using our new diagnostic instrument, the Halimeter, we will be able to actually measure the odor causing gases present in the mouth. These gases come from the bacteria in the mouth which are responsible for breath odors. An extensive interview, periodontal evaluation, and clinical exam are used to properly diagnose your problem.

Treatment: The treatment of breath disorders can take many forms. If medical problems are found to be the underlying cause, proper referral will be made. Dental problems such as rough, broken and leaking fillings or infections, in the mouth, must of course be treated. A thorough dental cleaning must be performed to eliminate all surface deposits. Any signs of gum disease must be treated and eliminated, as this has been shown to contribute to the production of the gases we notice as bad breath. You will then learn how to control the VSC'S present in the mouth. They can be controlled by regular oral hygiene, such as brushing, flossing and tongue cleaning to reduce bacteria and inflammation but more importantly they can be controlled with use of oral cleansing products that contain oxidizing agents that directly destroy the sulfur compounds The most effective oxidizing agent available is Stabilized Chlorine Dioxide.

Stabilized Chlorine Dioxide is a powerful oxidizing compound. Only recently have the remarkable properties of chlorine dioxide been directed to personal care products and to professional health care applications. It is highly effective in destroying sulfur compounds and bacterial control and it is also very safe. Unlike chlorine compounds, stabilized chlorine dioxide does not produce the same by-products that have been known to cause cancer or other serious side effects.

If you are one of the millions of Americans who suffer from the embarrassing social problem of “Bad Breath”, now you can eliminate it at its source and . . .
